Protect “rBGH-Free” Labeling!

The Ohio Department of Agriculture and Governor Strickland are moving forward with final approval for their bad milk labeling rule. The rule still creates so many barriers, that it may discourage many companies from using the labeling, making it harder for consumers to know what's in their milk.

This could be our last opportunity to stop it before it goes through. The letter below is going to the members of the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review. These are members of the State Legislature that are in charge of enforcing checks and balances over all of the State Department's rules.

Dear Committee Member,

I am writing to ask you to recommend invalidation of the Ohio Department of Agriculture's proposed rule 901:11-8-01.

I feel that the proposed rule conflicts with the existing policy of a federal agency.  The Food and Drug Administration has had federal policy on artificial growth hormone free milk labeling for the last 14 years.  This policy has been working fine, and gives consumers the full and accurate information they need.  This is an unnecessary rule for the State of Ohio to enact.

Additionally as written, this rule will also place undue burden on small dairy producers, and has an inaccurate fiscal analysis.  The Ohio Department of Agriculture's projected cost of compliance is only $250-$350. To comply, some small producers have thousands of dollars worth of labels that will be lost, and have to get new labels designed and printed, which will cost several thousand dollars more.

You can help consumers, and the State of Ohio by recommending invalidation of this rule.
