Tell Governor Sebelius You Want To Know What's In Your Milk!

Last week the Kansas State Legislature passed a bill restricting how much information consumers get about what is in their milk. The legislature wants to make it difficult for consumers to find out whether their milk is produced with artificial hormones like rBGH. This bill has a national impact because national and regional brands will be forced to either produce separate lables or simply stop labeling milk without the hormone as rBGH-free.

Governor Sebelius can and should veto this bill. The governor is President Obama's nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, which houses the Food and Drug Administration. Let's tell our future Secretary of HHS that she should protect consumers' right to know as her final act as Governor before heading to Washington.

Dear Governor Sebelius:

I urge you to veto HR 2121.  This bill severely restricts consumers' right to know what is in their milk. Consumers want and deserve to know if their milk contains artificial hormones, but this bill makes it much more difficult for consumers to make accurate choices.

Although I am not from Kansas, I am your future constituent if you become the secretary of Health and Human Services. The FDA has already established labeling guidelines for rBGH-free products.    Show the country that you stand up for consumers by vetoing this bill before coming to Washington.

This bill is part of a national effort to make it more difficult for consumers to know what is in our milk, and this bill will have national ramifications.  Because Kansas would have different standards from the rest of the country, regional and national producers will be forced to either produce special labels for Kansas or simply stop labeling their products as rBGH-free altogether.

At a time when consumers are increasingly rejecting milk containing rBGH, its important to protect our right to know what is in the milk we buy.
