Support Smart Water Solutions – Not Salt Water

The California Coastal Commission, California State Lands Commission, and the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Board are going to hear the proposal for the construction of an ocean desalination facility in Huntington Beach, CA. Poseidon Resources, a private water speculator, is seeking permission to co-locate a 50-million-gallon-per-day ocean desalination facility with the existing power generating station in Huntington Beach. This project is expensive, contradicts statewide energy/climate/marine protection goals, may prolong the use of an antiquated open seawater intake system that kills marine life, and undermines other smart water solutions such as increased water conservation and reuse.

This project needs to be stopped in Huntington Beach.  If this project is approved, it could set the precedent for the approval of other expensive and environmentally destructive desalination facilities in California.

OCDC is a growing coalition of: Food & Water Watch, Surfrider Foundation, Residents for Responsible Desalination (R4RD), Orange County Coastkeeper, Desal Response Group, and Orange County League of Conservation Voters. 

I urge the CA Coastal Commission, CA State Lands Commission, and the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Board to oppose the proposed Poseidon ocean desalination facility in Huntington Beach because: • Ocean desalination is expensive. Poseidon says it will seek subsidies from Southern California's major water wholesaler, which would ultimately be paid for by ratepayers and/or taxpayers. • Ocean desalination is energy-intensive, undermining the goals and intent of A.B.32 and other state strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. • This project may prolong the use of an antiquated open seawater intake system that kills marine life. • Poseidon has a history of cost overruns and delays with desalination in Florida. • Better solutions to meet future water demand, including increasing conservation efforts, fixing system inefficiencies, capturing and storing rainwater, and water reuse, can meet our future water demand while protecting our coast and oceans.

It is energy intensive and will prolong the life of an out of date electric power plant that uses once through cooling. The water quality off Huntington Beach will suffer as will the marine life, but the people of Huntington Beach will not benefit. The water generated by this plant will not be used in Huntington Beach, and it is vastly more expensive than our ground water.
